Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl



In Guanacaste the bird of both day and night

This fierce little diurnal raptor provides us with its piping song daily. The musical accompaniment is an integral part of life in the rainforest. When the light intensity drops - the Pygmy-Owl pipes up. Although very active during the day the bird is also quite nocturnal. It is quite comforting to hear the continual melody as a background rhythm to howling Coyotes in dead of the night.











Hoffmann's Woodpecker is the common Costa Rican woodpecker and quite prolific in the area. They are quick to mob Pygmy-Owls, but there is never-the-less a certain symbiosis, the Hoffmann's (below) provides the owl with the cavities in which it breeds. 



 
Now In the rainy season Ctenosaur feeds on leaves in the bushes, during a break in the storm
