Coyote
Below zero temperatures in New Mexico USA
The beginning of February the thermometer was showing below freezing values there was a bitter wind, but our determined tour guide was waiting to start the 8:00 birding tour at the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park with a record breaking attendance of participants, totaling zero. The tour set out on the trail at 8:15 regardless. Then, walking along the path that follows the frozen solid Rio Grande. There was a wonderful encounter with a most handsome creature, a Coyote in wonderful condition with thick winter coat. This kind of natural experience makes being out in the elements so rewarding. The animal was not expecting any crazy humans out in a blizzard, and walked right up to photographer before catching his scent in the howling wind, and turning to run. This made the whole lonely cold adventure, worth while; really worth while.

Winter Raptors in New Mexico along with American Kestrel are Osprey, Northern Harrier. and Red-tailed Hawk. The Osprey have easy picking along the river, because as the water level recedes, cat fish and carp are left floundering.
