Roadrunner return to old Mesilla

New Mexico, USA

Roadrunner (Paisanos), used to visit the town quite often; according to the elders.
The people of old Mesilla tell me back in the good old days - when things were clean and less polluted. When Paisanos, (or fellow countrymen) came quite regularly to the backyards...

What a remarkable reappearance

So it was with a frenzied delight when I run into one in my backyard a few days ago
The bird was inspecting my compost heap with characteristic tilting of its head, yards away from our home Casa Rosa, Mesilla.
My granddaughter and I froze; not wishing the frighten away our V.I.P!
Knowing Grandpa's passion for photographing the creatures of the southwest granddaughter (7), crept away and reappeared with the old man's camera.

These pictures were the result. We have had even more pleasure sharing these shots with distinguished senior citizens around town many of which were actually born in Mesilla.

This creature really does have a mystic presence, not surprisingly there are many legends about this remarkable animal

From a scientific and conservation perspective, we know the bird to have been very successful this year at our local preserve. Due to heavy rainfall, and idea breeding conditions. Numbers increase, followed by the dispersals of  young birds. They are reconquering old territories. This is most welcomed by conservationists and the resident of the old town - giving us a feeling of everything is okay in the end.

 The classic happy ending
